Some of Our Story
Living and traveling in Europe from 1991 to 1993, a vision of building a life with a vineyard and a farm was an interesting but unlikely idea. In 2004 after visiting family, we found an 88 acre farm in Oregon’s breathtaking Willamette Valley. With its southwest exposure, rich soils, fantastic views of the coastal range, it was a perfect site to rekindle our fond memories of the European countryside.
Moving to the farm in 2006, our efforts focused on repairing a 1939 barn and farmhouse. During this same time, we worked on repairing fences, tilled acres of old pasture, and raised numerous types of livestock. We lived in the farmhouse while designing and building an estate home which was completed in 2008.
Planting a vineyard, producing grapes, and creating wine is a difficult journey. We now have 15 acres of grapes, almost all in production. Our first wine was made in 2013 with memorable heavy rains, some referred to this as “The harvest of Monsoons.” Each harvest continues to be unique, exciting, and rewarding.
Having purchased an adjacent 17 acres to our vineyard, we now embark on a final phase of our project. A tasting room looking towards the Ankeny Bird Refuge, sunsets slipping over the coastal mountain range, and views of our lower vineyard blocks. This will provide new experiences for our many friends of La Chouette Vineyard.
At La Chouette, the ethereal calls of owls often grace the night. We invite you to close your eyes, imagine their gentle, nocturnal serenade, and indulge in the elegant flavors of our vineyard.
